Child Centred Approach
Children learn best when they are given appropriate responsibility, allowed to experiment, make errors, decisions and choices, and are respected as learners. Within Big Bird Nursery we ensure that our learning environment takes into account the nature and value of each child’s creativity and imagination.
Our highly skilled staff value children’s self-initiated activity and their representations by being available, interested and involved with all children at all times. We provide them with learning experiences which put a strong emphasis on exploration and active participation on the part of the child.
We have extensive outdoor play opportunities which incorporate loose part play promoting learning through enjoyable play experiences, providing children with active, creative outdoor experiences.
Partnerships with Parents
At Big Bird Nursery we firmly believe that parents are a child’s prime educator. Therefore, for this reason parents of the nursery are highly valued and are an essential part of our high achieving centre.
Our parents committee is a core element to the success of our nursery. Our parents drive the nursery forward in partnership with our highly qualified and motivated staff, ensuring the service we provide reflects the needs and expectations of our service users.
In order to maintain effective communication with our service users we operate an open door policy where parents can approach management at any time. We have a talking and thinking wall which is designed to share good practice and take on board feedback from parents. We also have a woodland committee and an eco-committee which parents are actively involved in.
To ensure parents are able to contribute to every level of their child’s learning and development all parents are invited to our planning meetings.
Snacks and Meals
All of our healthy snacks and meals are freshly prepared by our on-site chef. We use freshly prepared ingredients and work in partnership with our parents and children to design our menus, delivering tasting and feedback sessions when we change our menus.
- A selection of fresh fruit is available throughout the day
- Water is available throughout the day and children are provided with a choice of water, milk or diluted fresh fruit juice during meal times
Policies and Procedures
We have an extensive policy and procedure handbook. During the induction and settling in process parents are issued with a handbook which details all of our policies and procedures. The Manager of the service is available to discuss any of these at length.
The nursery has a secure entry system. The main entrance door is operated by an electronic swipe card and each individual playroom is secured by an electronic key pad. We also have CCTV surrounding the nursery building and gardens. We operate a password collection system if a child is being collected by someone other than the parents or carers.
